Tunde Onakoya successfully completes an astounding 60-hour marathon of non-stop chess, securing his place in the Guinness World Records

Tunde Onakoya has completed an extraordinary 60-hour chess marathon, with the ambitious goal of establishing a new Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon. Over the course of 60 intense hours in the heart of New York's bustling Times Square, he faced opponent after opponent, driven by unwavering determination and a profound mission to raise $1 million for children's education in Africa.

"This is for the aspirations of millions of children across Africa who lack access to education," declared Tunde, a chess master and the visionary behind Chess In Slum Africa. Initially setting out to play for 58 consecutive hours, Tunde surpassed his own expectations by pushing himself further, extending the marathon to a remarkable 60 hours.

Even after breaking the record at the 58-hour mark, Tunde remained resolute, urging his supporters to continue the journey. "We're aiming for 60 hours, everyone. We're not stopping yet. Let's press on," he rallied, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to the cause.

The current Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon, standing at 56 hours, 9 minutes, and 37 seconds, was achieved by Hallvard Haug Flatebø and Sjur Ferkingstad of Norway on November 11, 2018.

In a true display of Nigerian solidarity, supporters from New York's Nigerian community, including Afrobeats sensations Davido and Adekunle Gold, gathered in Times Square to cheer on Tunde. Meanwhile, back in Nigeria, the nation rallied behind him, tuning in to watch his record-breaking feat on Twitch. Notable figures like former Vice President of Nigeria and current Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, as well as Kashim Shettima, publicly voiced their support for Tunde's remarkable achievement.
