Finidi George Appointed New Super Eagles Coach, Faces World Cup Qualifier Crunch

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has named former international Finidi George as the new head coach of the Super Eagles. George takes the helm after a successful stint as assistant coach under José Santos Peseiro, who departed following Nigeria's runner-up finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

George's first order of business will be crucial. He'll lead the Super Eagles in two critical 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic in just over five weeks. These matches are vital for Nigeria's World Cup aspirations, as they currently sit third in Group C behind Rwanda and South Africa.

George, who briefly served as interim coach during two friendlies in Morocco last month, will need to quickly establish himself and get the team firing on all cylinders to secure victories in these upcoming qualifiers.
